Charisma Carpenter joins the show as Char's aunt Rebecca "Annie" Sewell, who is NOT the same Annie we've already met. Rebecca Sewell returns to town after having been gone for years. Ted is shocked to see her, as she knows some of his and Alec's secrets.
Rebecca and Alec conspire to deal with Phyllis, whose drinking problem becomes worse than ever.
Dan is worried about how "Sutton" is affecting Ethan.
The police uncover the car from the lake, but Sutton is not inside.
Thayer's accusations against Ethan could be a problem.
Sutton receives a threatening note.
1-12 "When We Dead Awaken" January 9
Emma checks out the University of Texas's tennis program. Randy Taylor (Drew Waters), a tennis scout, wants to check out "Sutton" but is Emma interested in pursuing that? Also, Emma remains on edge thanks to the note she received.
Meanwhile, Kristin discovers that Ted has been lying about something from his past.
Char's mom Phyllis is still drinking. Rebecca wants to "help" her, though she may also have her eye on taking over the poolhouse.
1-13 "Pleased to Meet Me" January 16
Kristin and Rebecca put together a silent auction for charity. At the event, Rebecca encourages Laurel to sing. Alec asks Rebecca to dance. Rebecca and Alec get to know each other better.
We'll meet Ryan (Misha Crosby), who returns to school at Arroyo after being kicked out of boarding school. He's interested in Mads, and Emma encourages the relationship, despite Mads' doubts.
Emma, Ethan, and Thayer follow a lead concerning what happened to Sutton at the lake. Emma's life gets turned upside down.

Ethan, Thayer, and Sutton (yes, Sutton) arrive at Derek's home looking for him. They find his mother instead, who tells them something that connects Derek to Ethan's brother Dan.

Someone was murdered. We're not giving away the victim's ID just yet, but this is no extra or newly added character.
Sutton was a possible witness to a crime connected to the murder -- but it's Emma who has to speak to the police about what happened, which may be difficult.
1-17
We'll meet Ethan's dad Ben, as well as a Native American woman interested in him. Ethan and Sutton have dinner with Ben and the woman. Are Ethan and Sutton into each other again?
Mads knows Emma's secret! Emma and Thayer open up to Mads about everything that is going on.
Rebecca knows a secret Laurel is keeping.
